We've
been told by some locals that back in the horse and buggy days,
whippletrees were repaired and swapped out in the area near The
Whippletree Restaurant. We'd love to hear more stories regarding our
history. If you have anything to add, please email Wesley at
manager@thewhippletreerestaurant.com.
The two photos below are Whippletrees, used
when horses (etc.) pull wagons.
Objects in the photos are really called "single trees"- using two of
them makes a Whippleree.
Whippletree: a pivoted or swinging bar to which the traces, or tugs, of a harness are fastened, and by which a
carriage, a plow, or the like, is drawn. A single-tree can be a whippletree if the item being drawn is a one-horse implement, e.g. shay, sleigh, etc.
